How many young people are in Vocational Education and Training?

29-Jan-2014

Higher School Certificate (HSC) results and ATAR rankings are now out and students across the country are making important choices about the future.

Some of them will opt for higher education, while others will investigate apprenticeships, traineeships and other vocational education and training options.

According to the National Centre for Vocational Education Research's (NCVER) latest "Australian Vocational Education and Training Statistics: Young People in Education and Training" report, 81.9 per cent of young people aged between 15 and 19 years were involved in some form of education or training activity in 2012.

Of those, 55.1 per cent were in school and 15.1 per cent were in higher education. An equal number of young people - 5.8 per cent - were enrolled in either a publicly funded vocational education and training program or an apprenticeship / traineeship.
Another report published by the NCVER recently revealed the number of apprenticeships in Australia rose during the September quarter 2013.

The increase in apprenticeship commencements was experienced across both trade and non-trade industries. In the former category, the number of young people involved in apprenticeships climbed by an impressive 4,500 between the June and September quarters 2013, from 22,700 to 27,200.

An encouraging number of school leavers also opted to undertake traineeships in 2013. The number jumped by almost 10,000 between the March and September quarters this year, from 33,700 young people to 43,600.
