MATES in Construction – Working to reduce suicide in the Australian construction industry

23-Mar-2015

Suicide levels within the construction industry are up to two times higher than those for other workers and construction workers are six times more likely to die through suicide than through workplace accidents.

MATES in Construction is a community development organisation aimed at reducing suicide and improving mental health and wellbeing within the Australian construction industry. MATES in Construction is all about MATES helping MATES – an industry led approach to an industry problem.

All school students attending PEER’s Technical College for Vocational Education and Training have been provided with HI VIS shirts with the MATES In Construction (MIC) logo on one sleeve and the Building Industry Redundancy Scheme Trust (BIRST) logo on the other sleeve. Donated to PEER by MIC and their state partner BIRST, it is hoped these shirts will encourage students to be aware of the services that MIC provides to the industry, and let them know that there is support and help out there if needed.

The MATES in Construction Program is widely regarded as the best practice solution for suicide and mental health issues on construction and building sites and is provided at no cost to the construction companies or the workers themselves.

BIRST is a redundancy fund that provides the construction industry employees with a secure benefit at the time of redundancy, retirement, death or permanent disablement.

PEER is a not for profit organisation dedicated to the employment and education of the highest quality apprentices and trainees in a supportive and safety conscience environment. As both a Group Training Organisation and Registered Training Organisation with over 28 years experience, PEER provides flexible workforce solutions to host businesses as well as providing training to pre-apprentices, apprentices, trainees and existing tradespersons.

PEER is proud to be recognised as an MIC accredited employer and acknowledges the important work of MATES in Construction as they support and train individuals in safety and mental health.
