METL - Securing skills for our maritime industry

20-Feb-2015

METL provides proven pathways for skill development in maritime trainees, helping to advance the maritime industry as a whole.

The Maritime Employees Training Ltd. (METL) concept was jointly developed by the Maritime Union of Australia and industry employers as a response to a skill shortage of seafarers.

METL commenced operations in 2011 and now provides trainees to 13 active vessels with over 100 of its trainees working through to completion and achieving their Integrated Rating certificate of proficiency.

METL recruit trainees from various sources and are intent on finding the right mix of skill, experience and attitude. They upskill experienced candidates from within the industry as well as being open to direct applications, particularly where there are demonstrated transferrable skills.

METL has over 500 people (a broad mix in terms of age, education and background) who have registered their interest in completing a traineeship. With only 40 traineeships available at any one time, demand dramatically outstrips supply, however this means METL is in the unique position of being able to select the very best people for traineeships.

One example is Brett McPherson. Prior to commencing his traineeship with METL, Brett was lifeguarding in summer and ski patrolling in winter. He started working on charter boats, fishing boats, landing barges, and small cargo ships as a deckhand to gain experience.

Brett had toyed with the idea of being part of the Maritime Industry since he was a kid, growing up on Lake Macquarie, and, seeing vessels coming in and out of Newcastle Harbour. When Brett turned 30 he wanted to achieve his goals and it was time to pursue his dream of being in the industry.

Since starting with METL Brett has been on three bulk carriers and his roles have varied depending on the vessel.

As a Trainee Integrated Rating we are required to help wherever needed. Every day is different which makes it interesting.”

Some of Brett’s roles have included helping in the engine room, on deck, splicing, steering, mooring, anchoring and setting up pilot ladders.

According to Brett, the best part of his traineeship is “being given the opportunity to work on a variety of vessels with all the different crew and work for different companies to help get your foot in the door and give you the experience needed”.

His words of wisdom for future trainees are to “embrace the opportunity you have been given and make the most of every day.”
