Training & Employment Opportunities for Indigenous Australians

06-Dec-2016

ATC Work Smart are providing opportunities for Indigenous Australians to achieve long term, sustainable employment, through targeted training and employment funded by the Department of Prime Minister under the Jobs Land and Economy Program (JLEP).

Darby is a very active and self-motivated Indigenous young person and a good example of the difference this program makes. In 2007 he was awarded Indigenous Young Achiever and he had also completed his white card, first aid certificate and a work placement in refrigeration and air-conditioning while at school.

Darby approached ATC Work Smart for the opportunity to take on full time training and listed a number of areas that he was most interested in. They advised him that the Pre Apprenticeship Introduction to the Trade of Roof Plumbing course may be a good starting point.

Darby was then placed with Nathan Lewis Roofing where he is enjoying studying a Certificate III in Roof Plumbing.

Darby wants to encourage more Indigenous people to take up training opportunities to advance their career prospects.   Apprenticeship and Traineeships are a great way to gain training while earning an income and once the training is completed the doors are open for better job opportunities.

Darby has regular on the job mentoring visits from his employment officer at ATC Work Smart as well discussions and progress reports from his TAFE lecturer.  His Host Employer Nathan Lewis is committed to ensuring Darby continues to be supported in the workplace and Darby has now completed 6 months on the job training as well as one block release with all associated units being completed.
