Now, more than ever, skilled Australians are needed to take up the leadership challenges ahead. The Today’s Skills: Tomorrow’s Leaders program makes a valuable contribution, identifying and developing the leadership potential that exists amongst the group training network’s 40,000 apprentices and trainees.

Each year 21 group training apprentices and trainees, high achievers in their chosen professions and potential industry leaders of the future, are
chosen to participate in an intensive program held at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. They come representing all states and territories and from varied industry backgrounds. The creative learning environment of Today’ Skills: Tomorrow’s Leaders is a unique opportunity for participants to develop their leadership and self management skills. They are challenged to take their current training successes to the next level and provided with practical tools to assist in clarifying their vision for the future and in working towards making this a reality.

The Patron of Group Training Australia, His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery, Governor-General of Australia, has launched the 2004, 2005 and 2006 programs at Government House. 80 invited guests comprising government representatives, industry leaders, VET sector stakeholders, GTOs and host employers have been present to lend their support to the program and treated to a morning tea and tour of Government House with His Excellency and Mrs Jeffery.

The inaugural program in 2004 was facilitated by Mark McCrindle, (social researcher and Generation Y expert). Sessions covered personal leadership skills, effective workplace teams, and leadership in the broader community, as well as input from AIS scholarship athletes. In 2005 and 2006 the program content has been designed by Ian Hutchinson (a leading Lifestyle Strategist) to assist participants to be more in control of their work/life situations and able to make better informed decisions resulting in increased productivity, motivation and satisfaction at work and in life generally. The 2005 and 2006 programs were extended to include attending Question Time at Parliament House and meeting with key ministers, including The Prime Minister and The Leader of the Opposition.
