"Careers advice and counselling got a considerable shot in the arm today, and that should be welcomed by everyone concerned with giving young Australians opportunities and jobs" said Jim Barron, CEO of Group Training Australia.
Mr Barron was referring to a series of policy initiatives announced by Federal Education, Science and Training Minister Dr Brendan Nelson at the 13th Australian Association of Career Counsellors' National Conference on the Gold Coast.
Mr Barron was also at the AACC National Conference to present the inaugural Group Training Australia Partnership Award to Charles Darwin University and Group Training Northern Territory for outstanding achievement in school to work transitions.
"Whilst modest in nature, each of the initiatives represent a step forward and a recognition by the Commonwealth that it can play a leadership role in a critical area of social policy - an area long regarded as being the sole preserve of the States and Territories".
"From Group Training Australia's perspective, we welcome these announcements as the group training network already plays a key role in charting the career paths of thousands of Australians."
"Given our excellent record in working with schools, career counsellors and vocational education and training institutions, the group training network looks forward to being a key contributor to this long overdue careers push."
