Children struggling with reading skills will benefit under the Australian Government’s new pilot Tutorial Voucher Initiative. Group Training Australia (WA), a not for profit organisation, is delivering the initiative in WA.
Many parents are not aware this funding is available; therefore, schools are playing a vital role in identifying students that are eligible and encouraging parents to apply.
Quick Facts
The protocol does not apply to situations where apprentices/trainees are returned to a GTO because of issues relating to:
- The $700 voucher provides for a pre and post tuition assessment and approx 13 tutorial sessions (15.5 hours of tuition in total).
- All tuition is provided one-on-one and all students receive an individualised programme. Programmes are designed to support the student’s school curriculum.
- This initiative is a pilot program so eligibility is currently restricted to those students that were in year 3 in 2003 and were reported as below the national reading benchmark.
- 1500 students across metropolitan and regional WA are eligible. Approximately 1000 live in the metropolitan area and 500 in regional or rural communities.
- GTA (WA) does not have a list of eligible students, so is unable to notify parents that this initiative is available.
- Parents will have a choice of tutors (where possible).
- The location of the tuition will be arranged to suit the circumstances in school, the student’s home or a community facility. (It cannot happen in the tutor’s home.)
- Tutors have relevant experience and teaching qualifications.
- The program is due for completion by 9 October 2005, so the deadline for applications is 31 August 2004.
